Josu Okiñena, Pianist

After obtaining the first prize for piano and chamber music from the Higher Conservatory of San Sebastian, where he was born, Josu Okiñena studied with Félix Lavilla. He won several prizes: the final-year top prize at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid as well as the Andrés Segovia and José Miguel Ruiz prize for his interpretation of Spanish music, in Santiago de Compostela.

At the Julliard School of Music of New York, he took part in the master classes of pianists such as Oxana Yabloskaya. He was tutored by Krystian Zimmerman, Bruno Leonardo Gelber and Ivo Pogorelich. He trained in London for a period of five years with Maria Curcio, a student of the legendary Austrian pianist Arthur Schnabel.

He teaches at the Basque Country School of Music, Musikene, and obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Valladolid.

Josu Okiñena performed in some of the most important auditoriums in the world such as the Colon theatre in Buenos Aires, the Ateneum in Bucarest or the National Auditorium in Madrid.

At present he forms a piano duet with the French-American pianist Alan Gampel as well as with Miguel Ituarte, one of the most important Spanish pianists of this generation.
